A skid steer loader is extremely popular for a variety of tasks it performs. This small, compact construction machine, also called bobcat, can easily accommodate a wide range of attachments. Different industries, construction, landscaping, manufacturing and even demolition find ideal use of loaders.

How the vehicle drives is the origin of its name. A skid steer loader turns and skids by moving the wheels on one side while stopping the opposite wheels. This makes turning in very small circle possible.

The overall size of these loaders and the physical work area should be taken into consideration. It should fit into the garage, driveway, or gate.

The dumping height needed to lift things should be determined. This refers to the distance, usually ranging between eight to ten feet, from the ground to the point where the loader arms pivot the bucket. The loader should be also chosen according to its lifting capacity, oftentimes referred to as operating capacity. The load to be lifted should be within its capability.

There are three main choices of tires to be used in these types of loaders. Air- filled tires are the cheapest and the best for smooth rides on rocky or uneven surfaces. Unfortunately, they can get punctures at times. Although a bit more expensive, getting punctures will not be a cause for worry with foam-filled pneumatic tires. They are much heavier than normal air-filled ones. Though not as comfortable, solid rubber tires are longer lasting among the three choices.

Air-filled tires are commonly chosen because they are economical and most comfortable. However, their tires can be changed according to the surface.

These machines are used to be three-wheeled vehicle. Later models have the loaders equipped with four wheels positioned close together. For work in muddy or slippery conditions, they can be fitted with tracks. Better traction in mud or loose ground and less damage to the ground are few of the advantages when working with tracked loaders.

Some other factors need to be considered when trying out available models. Staying inside the cab for hours makes comfort an important matter. Good padding, easy adjusting of the seat and easy reach of the controls while seated, make up the comfort factor of the cab. Above all, the cab should allow good visibility from inside. This puts safety uppermost among other considerations when buying a skid steer loader.
